City Guide

Copenhagen

Royal castles, canal-side colour, world-class food and a city that runs on bicycles, all walkable in a few days.

Copenhagen is compact, flat and built for walking and cycling, which makes it one of the easiest European capitals to explore in a few days.

The Danish capital sits on the island of Zealand, facing Sweden across the Øresund. It blends royal history with cutting-edge design, a world-class food scene and a relaxed, bike-powered rhythm. Here's how to get the most out of it.

What to see

Nyhavn

Nyhavn

The 17th-century canal lined with brightly painted townhouses, and the city's most photographed spot. Start canal tours here.

Tivoli

Tivoli Gardens

Historic amusement park and gardens in the heart of town, beside the main station. Especially lovely after dark.

Rosenborg

Rosenborg & the Crown Jewels

A storybook royal castle and gardens, ten minutes' walk from the centre.

Strøget

Strøget & the old town

One of Europe's longest pedestrian shopping streets, threading through medieval squares and the Stork Fountain.

Copenhagen skyline

Towers & views

Climb the Round Tower (Rundetårn), the spiral Church of Our Saviour, or Christiansborg's tower for rooftop panoramas.

Copenhagen harbour

Harbour & islands

Swim at the harbour baths in summer, walk the modern Aarhus-style waterfront, or hop the free harbour buses.

Neighbourhoods worth your time

  • Indre By (old town): palaces, churches, squares and shopping; the historic core.
  • Nørrebro: multicultural, creative and full of cafés, bars and the Assistens Cemetery park where Hans Christian Andersen is buried.
  • Vesterbro: the former meatpacking district (Kødbyen), now a hub of restaurants and nightlife.
  • Christianshavn & Freetown Christiania: canals, houseboats and the famous alternative community (respect the local photography rules).

Getting around

Copenhagen's Metro runs 24/7 and connects the airport (CPH) to the city centre in around 15 minutes, alongside buses, S-trains and harbour buses on one integrated ticket. But the local way is to cycle, and the city has hundreds of kilometres of protected bike lanes and easy rental. See Getting There & Around for tickets, the City Pass and the Copenhagen Card.

A handy base for day trips: Kronborg Castle (Helsingør), the Louisiana modern-art museum, and the Roskilde Viking ship museum are all easy train rides from Copenhagen.

Transport times are approximate and based on general knowledge. Confirm current Metro, ticket and Copenhagen Card details with official sources before your trip.
