Denmark is one of the most family-friendly countries you can visit: safe, clean, walkable, and full of attractions built with children in mind. It is, after all, the home of Lego and Hans Christian Andersen.
Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen
Gentle rides for little ones, thrills for teens, gardens, food and evening lights, easily a whole day in the centre of the city.
LEGOLAND Billund
The original Lego theme park in Jutland, plus the hands-on Lego House nearby. The definitive family pilgrimage.
Den Blå Planet
Northern Europe's largest aquarium, in a striking whirlpool-shaped building near Copenhagen Airport.
Copenhagen Zoo
One of Europe's oldest zoos, with an elephant house designed by Norman Foster.
Den Gamle By, Aarhus
A living open-air "old town" museum where streets and houses recreate Danish life across the centuries.
HC Andersen House, Odense
A modern, immersive museum in the storyteller's birthplace, designed to feel like stepping into a fairy tale.
Practical tips for families
- Getting around is easy. Public transport is clean and reliable, and children travel free or discounted with a paying adult on most services (confirm current rules locally).
- Bring or rent bikes with child seats. Cycling is safe and normal here; many families rent cargo bikes (ladcykler).
- Cafés and museums are buggy-friendly and changing facilities are widespread. You'll see prams everywhere.
- Summer is ideal for families, with long daylight, mild weather, beaches and outdoor attractions all open. See Best Time to Visit.
Attraction descriptions are general knowledge. Family discounts, opening seasons and prices change, so confirm with each venue before you go.
