Aarhus

Denmark's lively second city of museums, an old town, and a bold modern waterfront.

On the east coast of Jutland, Aarhus is Denmark's second-largest city and a young, energetic counterpoint to Copenhagen, powered by a big university.

Its signature sight is ARoS, the art museum crowned by Olafur Eliasson's circular rooftop walkway, "Your Rainbow Panorama," which lets you see the city through every colour of the spectrum. Nearby, Den Gamle By ("The Old Town") is a living open-air museum recreating Danish town life across the centuries.

The redeveloped Aarhus Ø waterfront showcases striking contemporary architecture, including the wave-formed "Iceberg" housing. Aarhus is about three hours from Copenhagen by train.
